Early Life and Background

Charlotte Emma Aitchison, known professionally as Charli XCX, was born on August 2, 1992, in Cambridge, England. Raised in Start Hill, Essex, she is the only child of Jon Aitchison, a Scottish entrepreneur and former show-booker, and Shameera Aitchison, a Gujarati Indian former nurse and flight attendant born in Uganda. Charli's multicultural upbringing exposed her to a diverse array of musical influences, from the Spice Girls to Britney Spears, igniting her passion for pop music at an early age. By 14, she was writing songs and sharing them on MySpace, which led to performances at London raves and warehouse parties under the moniker Charli XCX—a name derived from her MSN Messenger username. Her parents supported her burgeoning career, even accompanying her to some of these early gigs. After briefly attending Bishop's Stortford College and the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London, she left academia to pursue music full-time. 

Musical Career and Breakthrough

Charli XCX signed with Asylum Records in 2010, releasing a series of mixtapes and singles that showcased her experimental approach to pop. Her breakthrough came in 2012 when she co-wrote and featured on Icona Pop's hit "I Love It," followed by her solo success with "Boom Clap" in 2014, which charted globally and featured on the soundtrack for "The Fault in Our Stars." Her second studio album, "Sucker" (2014), included hits like "Break the Rules" and "Doing It" featuring Rita Ora. Charli continued to push pop boundaries with her mixtapes "Number 1 Angel" and "Pop 2" in 2017, collaborating with avant-garde producers like A.G. Cook and SOPHIE, and embracing a hyperpop aesthetic. 

Recent Projects and Collaborations

In 2024, Charli XCX released her sixth studio album, "Brat," which received critical acclaim and became her highest-charting album on the Billboard 200.The album's bold aesthetic and themes resonated widely, even influencing political campaigns and social movements.She embarked on the "Brat Tour," performing sold-out shows across Europe, North America, and Oceania.Additionally, she co-headlined the "Sweat" tour with Troye Sivan, further solidifying her status as a pop innovator.

Personal Life and Advocacy

Charli XCX is known for her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality. She has been a vocal supporter of the transgender community, participating in campaigns like Conner Ives' "Protect the Dolls" initiative, which raised funds for Trans Lifeline. In her personal life, she is engaged to George Daniel, drummer of the band The 1975, and often credits him for providing stability amidst her dynamic career.
